Gupta Art and Literature
The Gupta period has been called the golden age of Indian history in terms of development of art and literature.
Vastu art: -
Temple building art was born in the Gupta period itself.
Dashavatar Temple (Jhansi) of Deogarh is probably the first example of Shikhar in Indian temple construction. The construction of the shikhara temple is an important achievement of the Gupta era.
During the Gupta period, small bricks and stones have been used in temple construction. The inner village (Kanpur) temple is built of bricks and is built on a square platform. Arches were first used in India at its peak.
During the Gupta period, Brahmin and Buddhist Guha temples were also built.
A Brahmin Guha temple was built at Udayagiri (Vidisha). It was built by Chandragupta Vikramaditya's commander Veerasen. A huge statue of the Varaha avatar of Vishnu has been installed in the Guha temple of Udayagiri. The Varaha avatar is inscribed, saving the earth from the sea.
Gupta sculptors, influenced by the Mathura style, made sculptures.
The idol of Ganga Yamuna is a gift from the Gupta period.
The actual size statue of Varaha was obtained from Eran which was constructed by Bhanavishnu.
The best example of Gupta sculpture is the sculptures of Sarnath. The three major centers of sculpture during the Gupta period were Mathura, Sarnath and Pataliputra.
A 7 1/2 feet high copper statue of Buddha has been found from Sultan Ganj.
The idol of Vishnu in the Dashavatar temple of Deogarh, the statue of the Varaha avatar of Udayagiri and the sculptures found from Kashi and Kaushambi of the Sun reflect the maturity of sculpture of the Gupta period.
A statue of Buddha sitting in Sarnath and a statue of Buddha standing in Mathura has been found.
Ajanta's cave numbers 16, 17 and 19 belong to the Gupta period.
Tiger caves are also an example of cave architecture of the Gupta period.
The paintings in Ajanta and tiger caves show the progress of Gupta painting.
